What’s this site about?

Hi, and welcome. I just wanted to take a moment to explain what this site is all about. Firstly this site aims to be a one stop shop to guide you on how to make money with Google Adsense. Google Adsense is an advertising programme that allows publishers to make money from targeted “in content” advertisements. If you have landed here, you probably already knew that, but maybe you want to know more, like what are the secrets? How do people make very good money using Google Adsense? These are the questions which this site will answer. I will also use this site as a model on how a good Adsense site should be set up, and when this site starts to gain the sort of organic search traffic, which I know it is capable of, I will also position Adsense ads on this site. I have been an Adsense publisher for a few years now, and time and time again, I find that there are a few keys to success. What are they?

Social Traffic and Organic Search Traffic

This is the first common stumbling block. When people decide that they want to have a go at making money online, they often have a romanticized image of it in their head. Making easy money well they sleep, playing with the kids while the cash comes rolling in. This can be a bad thing when this vision stops them from making the right choices from the beginning. The normal story I see is an enthusiastic go getter, buys their own domain, commonly something like their own name, or a random cool sounding word that doesn’t seem to relate to anything. They “blog” about topics they see on sites like Digg.com or any other social site. The idea behind this strategy is that if they create content that is interesting people will want to read it. As they haven’t really thought about traffic, the first step they might take is to submit an article to Digg.com. Because if an article is popular on Digg, it will make your lots of money right? Well probably not. This is a huge mistake. Not all traffic is profitable. Social traffic in particular is very hard to make money from, and is a waste of time for Adsense sites.

I have found the only way to make profitable Adsense sites is to get organic search traffic. This is where all the money is. Either you are buying it with PPC, or you are ranking for high volume keywords yourself. Ranking highly for profitable keywords is what I do. Traffic that comes from search engines for ranking for terms is called organic search traffic. The reason this sort of traffic makes you money is because it is targeted. The person has opened Google, or any other search engine, and typed their intention: “How to Make Money from Google Adsense”. If you landed on this site from searching for this term, I know you are after the sort of information I am giving. In the same way someone searching for “Iphone review” is looking for a review of an iphone, and someone searching for “Bad credit loans”, has bad credit and is trying to get a loan. All of these terms signal the user intention, so if we capture this user, we can make money from them. Simple. Social traffic is the opposite. You know nothing about the user coming to your site.

Keyword / Niche Research

Once you come onboard with the line of thinking that organic search traffic is the best traffic to get, you then need to think about what keywords are going to bring you traffic. You also need to think about if that traffic is likely to be buying traffic, or information traffic, and then how you will convert the traffic into money. Buying traffic is easy to convert. Sell them the product they are looking for. Information traffic can also make money, using either PPC ads, like Adsense, or via selling an information product like an Ebook. However, since the focus of this site is Adsense, we will just focus on that.

You need to decide on a niche for your new site. What will you write about? Do you know a lot about this topic already? Will you pay someone else to write the content? Once you have selected a niche which you think will be profitable, you need to find keywords that will bring you the most profitable traffic. A good starting tool for this task is the free Google Adwords Keyword tool.

Tips for using:

Do a quick search for a broad keyword in your niche

Change match type to from broad to exact

Turn on the average CPC column.
… Now search again

How to read the results:

The higher the CPC, the more money the term is worth from an Adsense perspective. The value will be inflated as it is giving the average price someone will pay for a click, Google takes some of this, and this value is for ad placements directly on search engines, placements on your site are worth less. But the higher the CPC, the more the term is worth to you. Higher volume search terms will bring more traffic, so the more searches the better…however…

Keyword Competition

The more searches a term gets, the more competition for that term you are likely to find, and the harder it likely is to rank for. So the next step is to look at the competition, and decide which terms are worth your time. For most terms you can rank for eventually, however, the harder the term, the more effort, the less return on investment. So finding keyword terms that bring traffic, but have less competition are really the key focus here. The best way to judge competition is to open google and search for the term. Look at all the sites ranking on the first page. The most important factors for ranking are:

Keyword use in title tag of site

Keyword use in domain name

Substantive, unique content on page

Keyword focused anchor text in links

Quantity/quality of links

Diversity of link sources

Page specific trust rank

Relevance of link sources

Keyword specific anchor text from internal links

Now obviously you can easily go overboard here and kill hours looking at these details for every site, however this probably isn’t the best strategy. Time is money and we want fast results. SEO Quake is a browser plug-in which will quickly show you most of the above factors in a few seconds. Be warned it will slow down your browsing speed so it’s a good idea to install it on an alternative browser.

It’s hard to suggest what level of competition is worth going after for every individual. This is something you will get with experience. The more sites you set up, the closer you will get to finding what you are comfortable with. At first it is probably worth focusing on something that doesn’t have a whole heap of authority sites on the first page. Some key sites I like to see on the first few pages of a term are Squidoo lenses, Ezine articles, Hub Pages, or Go articles. These sites are free authority sites where people can set up content and articles. These sites rank relatively easily with little effort because they are on real authority domains. However they probably don’t have a lot of backlinks, so they can be out ranked with a little effort.

Writing Quality Articles

Writing content for your Adsense sites is a key step. Some people mess around with PLR content, and other rubbish like that. The truth is PLR content, as it is, is a complete waste of time. So many other sites have the exact same articles on their sites, so the content is not seen as original by Google. Substantive, unique content on the pages you are trying to rank is important. So you are either going to have to write good original content yourself or pay someone else to do it. If you buy articles always thoroughly proof read them, and use Copyscape to check to see if the articles are 100% original. Using your keywords in your articles at least a few times is worth the effort. Some people suggest this now has little effect on ranking as it is too easily manipulated, however, having your keyword on page a few times is a good idea. Make sure your articles have your keywords in their titles. Your site name should also have your keyword in it.

Targeted Domains

Top search engine rankings can be achieved without keywords in the domain name, however, for smaller Adsense sites it makes sense to aim for exact domain names where possible. What I mean by this is if you are trying to rank for the keyword XYCABC, you go a buy the domain XYCAMC.com. You will notice that the domain name of this site is an exact match for my main keyword phrase. Exact match domains mean that we can rank much more easily with less backlinks. This is true particularly for dot com domains. A dot com domain will always rank much more easily that other domains on Google.com, and this is where most of your traffic will come from. A dot net domain for a good keyword also has some value. Geotargted domains have value if targeting local niches, however, for Adsense sites you probably want to stay global.

You probably realise that most of the great dot com domains are already gone, and to a certain degree this truth. However, there are always new trends popping up making new terms profitable, and old domains expiring. For example in 2005 an iphone was unheard of, so iphone related domains would have been unclaimed, now it is a huge consumer product and there are plenty of profitable terms that involve iphones. If you had got on board and scored a domain when it was first announced you could find your self a goldmine of domains.

SEO and Quality Backlinks

I have already listed the important factors for ranking above. These are the key focus of any SEO campaign. However, the most important factor, that is also the hardest, is link building. Every link aiming at your site is like an endorsement of your site. If that link is anchored with keywords, “How to Make Money with Google Adsense”, for example, it is like an endorsement for your site being a good page about that topic. So building lots of backlinks that have your keywords in them is the main key to your success. Quality, quantity, and link diversity are all important. More links, links from authority sites, and links from plenty of different sources.

How to get links

Getting links needs to become your bread and butter if you are to become successful at creating profitable Adsense sites, but where should I get these links you ask? Here is a proven list of link building methods. Some require more effort than others.

Writing Articles for links: There are a few real authoritive domains that allow you to write articles on their sites for free, and they allow you to get a backlink or two back to your own site. These include: Ezine articles, Go articles, Hubpages, and Squidoo + others.

Posting Comments on blogs: Blogging is very popular. There are millions of blogs out there. All these blogs have comment forms that allow you to get a link back to your site. Some have the no-follow tag applied to them, which make the links worth very little, however some have this disabled to encourage more comments. These blogs are called Do-follow blogs. They are well worth your effort for writing a relevant comment on someone’s article. On standard Do-follow blogs you have to leave your name as the link anchor and this isn’t ideal, however if you search for Keywordluv blogs, these sites allow you to get a targeted do-follow link back to your site. Similarly Commentluv blogs also give you a link back to your most recent article, and assuming you use your keywords in your article headings this is worth the effort too. So finding a good list of Do-follow, Keywordluv, and Commentluv blogs to post meaningful comments on is a good way to build backlinks. Don’t bother writing small short generic comments like “Thanks for the post”. The authors of these blogs know you are just trying to get an easy backlink and they will delete your comment. Read the post and write a meaningful comment if you want a free backlink.

Submitting your site to directories: This is pretty old school now in 2010, and most site directories have very little value. There are a few good ones, but they mostly are very hard to get accepted into or cost. Still this is worth the effort, particularly if you can find niche targeted directories.

Social Bookmarking: There are plenty of sites out there which basically allow you to bookmark sites and articles you like. These then become public links on your profile. These links are of pretty low value but are worth the effort if you find ways to automate the process. Onlywire is a site which will help you with this, plus there is a huge range of software packages out there for this.

Forum signatures: There are forums all over the net. If there is a big one relating to the niche of your site, posting a few posts on the site and including your link in the footer will help you out. These links don’t have much value, but may bring you some direct traffic. As your signature will likely be displayed on your public profile page for the forum, you also get a link from that page. Some high profile marketers make a living out of selling forum lists that have public profiles for you to add your link to. I am not a huge believer in this method, as it takes a lot of time to manually add all the links, and so many other people are doing it the sites often block your efforts by making profiles private, or blocking new signups. However lots of people use this method to build their links.

Link exchanges: I don’t recommend participating in link exchanges until you actually have a well indexed site which has page rank, age, and a good amount of backlinks. If you do, the only sites you are likely attract are other new sites, and links from these sites have little value and come with a whole heap of draw backs I won’t go into. However, once you have all of the above, you should likely attract a few good link partners. Site wide links aren’t that great, but they are easy to add, and they do help as long as they are from a good site.

Guest posts / articles: This is a very good method at gaining high quality backlinks, but it does take a lot of effort. You need to find another site in your niche preferably a real authority site that is has good page rank and lots of backlinks. Send them an email and ask if they would like you to do a guest post. Write a quality article for them and include a backlink to your site, with your keyword. The article will need to be good and be original content, and not an article on have used anywhere else.

Ok, so that was a brief overview of the methods I use to make money with Google Adsense. I will be updating this site from time to time with more articles on the topic that will go into more depth in certain areas discussed above. Feel free to ask questions or leave a comment using the comment form. Cheers.

Source: Money, money, money

The top 10 Make Money Online Tips for making money with websites.

Build quality links – Build links to your sites every day. Do site link exchanges, use do follow social bookmarks, comment on do follow blogs, submit your sites to directories, post articles in article directories, build hubs or squidoo’s, any of these techniques work, but you have to do them often. The more links your site has the more traffic you will get from search engines.

Write or get fresh original content for your sites. Fresh content is gold, but it must be original. You don’t need to post every day, but posting more often does encourage more visits from search engine spiders. I don’t post to this site often enough, so I am a hypocrite.

Research keywords that will get traffic, and optimise your content for these keywords.i.e. use those keywords in your article title, body text, and for the anchors of incoming links.

Select niches that will make you money. Sure writing about blogging tips might be fun, but it won’t make you money.

Don’t jump on band wagons. People that write e-books will sell you anything. Most of it isn’t worth the hard drive space it wastes on your PC. Find out what works for you, and stick to it. Stop trying to find the next big thing, make more content and get more backlinks. Everything else is just distracting you from making money.

Select appropriate monetization for your content. Adsense earns me a nice check each month, but I wouldn’t use it on all my sites. For example use Adsense on sites where you get a lot of search traffic for targeted keywords. Use affiliate links or Ebay Partner Network for product related sites.

If you can’t think of an article to write for your niche, research some good keywords that have good traffic potential and create articles around each of them.

A pretty site might get you an RSS subscriber or a tweet follower, but it may not increase your click through rates. Simple design, with well placed ads are more important than bells and whistles.

Research your content. Read other blogs about the same topic. Use them to inform your content. They don’t have to be your competition, they may also make great link partners.

Build quality links to your sites. It really is that important so I am going to say it again. I define a quality link as a link that’s from a relevant, related source, that is anchored using a keyword that you are targeting for traffic from search engines.

Hope these help. It’s not that hard to make good money online, but it does take time and effort.

If the heading pulled you in and you are actually reading this I am guessing you are looking for ways to make money at home. If you have a computer and an Internet connection, there are plenty of opportunities to make money at home. There are some morally gray methods which I won’t go into, and there are plenty of good honest ways to make extra cash online. I am going to be honest with you, if you know nothing about online money making opportunities I am not going to turn you into a “work from home” legend over night. What I can do if give you some solid advice on how to make money at home, that will work for you, and get you started on the right path.

Where to start

A safe any easy way to make money at home that isn’t going to hit your pocket too hard is to produce content sites, or articles and then optimise them for search engines, and then run ads on them once you start getting traffic. Sure there are other faster ways to make money online, but they require experience, and some of them can cost you a bucket if you don’t do it right. So content sites are a good place to start. You can even use free hosting options such as blogger to host your site, so there is no chance of losing money.

What should I write about?

I recommend writing about a topic you enjoy, although this is not necessarily mandatory. Plenty of people make good money writing about insurance, and pharmaceutical products. But I will leave that decision to you, what is most important is that you create content for a niche that has good advertiser competition, and money involved. The easiest way to find this out is to use Google’s External Adwords Keyword Tool. Try typing a generic topic that interests you into the box, and search. This will give you a few interesting stats. The ones we are most interested about are search volume, and cpc. Cpc is hidden when you first search so you will need to un-hide it. Obviously the more searches and the higher the cpc, the more money there is that can be made from writing about the topic. The higher these two factors are though, the higher competition you are likely to find. If it is your first project I don’t suggest you pick a topic that will have too much competition.

What next?

Write your content. Good content is more linkable, but it is also important that you use relevant keywords throughout your content. I am not going to go into depth about SEO in this article. Read some more of my content to find some good free links and ideas about how to best optimise your content. If you have selected a larger topic, then you should find plenty of different article topics to write about. Write articles that are optimised for specific search terms that have a good volume of searches. If this article has been useful for you and you are looking for more help keep reading my other articles. Cheers.

When building a new website most people are aware that it will need traffic to do well. But where will you get this traffic from?

Social Traffic

A quick glance around the blogosphere might have you believing that the secret to success to to gain lots of readers, and to build traffic from social media sites such as Digg or StumbleUpon. What good is this traffic? Visitors that come from these sites are webmasters like you. They don’t click on ads. So they won’t make you money. Yes “social traffic” can make you money. If you have a great site with a lot of great content, and you work really hard on it over a long period of time you will probably manage to build up a good sized readership. This readership may even be large enough to allow you to sell ad spots on your site at a flat rate. However, as this traffic is mostly made up of webmasters like you, the people who buy your ads will find that they are not getting many clicks, and it is not worth their money. I don’t recommend you chase this sort of traffic.

Organic Search Traffic

Organic traffic is traffic that comes to your site from search engines. You won’t get any organic traffic until you have a good amount of backlinks to your site. So new web masters who find backlinks hard to come by often give up and often go looking for the social traffic above. There are two types of organic traffic that you can target, and here is how the theory of getting this traffic works:

a) Long Tail

A long tail search term is a term that isn’t searched for often. Something like “How can I make money using free blogger accounts and Google Adsense”. This term is very specific and and the visitor will be highly targeted, so worth a great deal to you. However, because this exact term is not likely to be searched by great deal of people, you can’t, and shouldn’t target this term. The theory of gaining traffic through long tail terms is that you write a lot of content about your chosen topic, and the more you write the more possible long tail traffic will find you. More content = more possible terms = more traffic. Simply writing more content will get you more visitors.

b) High Volume Keywords

A high volume search term is a term that is searched by a lot of people. Something like “Make Money Online” or “How to Make Money Online“. If you can rank for these terms you will get a lot of visitors. It is important to research high volume terms to find out i) How many visitors the term will bring? ii) How hard it will be to rank for the term? and iii) If you are using Adsense, how much will clicks from that visitor pay? For the first and last points you should use Google’s free Adwords research tool. Go to the tool and search for a general term relating to your site.i.e: “Making Money Online”, you you will get a list of relevant terms. To find out how hard it is to rank you need to consider a few factors. The first place to start is to search the term in Google. What site is ranked on top? What PR does the site have and how many backlinks do they have? To find out the backlinks part there are a number of tools that can help you. A free option I use is the browser plug-in SEO Quake. The more backlinks the sites at the top have the harder it will be to rank for them. That’s not to say you shouldn’t try, it’s just that it will be harder. A lot of competition for a term suggests it is worth ranking for. For information on how you rank for terms read more in my article about Making money online for free.

I guarantee I will not sell you anything in this article. All I will give you is free information to show you How to Earn Money Online.

Quick Links to save you time:

Beginner: Keep Reading.

Intermediate: Skip the intro and Jump to step by step guide.

Advanced: Skip the guide and jump straight to the huge list of places to get free anchored backlinks.

Chances are that heading made most people move on. Articles about making money online or about How to Earn Money Online are a dime a dozen. People see what A-list bloggers like Shoemoney, John Chow and Problogger have achieved, start up new blogs, start posting about topics with article headings like the heading of this article, and just wait for the money to come in. I know, because, to some degree I was one of these jackasses. I started this blog with the intention to make a bit of money. I wanted 1000’s of visitors, I wanted them to click on my ads and I wanted to make some cash to support my full time job.

Have you ever read terms like: Content is king, post often to stimulate the search engines, etc etc.

Truth is good content helps, and having a site that is updated often is almost certainly a factor in major search engine ranking algorithms. However, at the end of the day what will make you money is not how regularly you post, or necessarily how great your content is, but how many quality backlinks you build to your site.

What I am saying is hardly ground breaking stuff. Bloggers like Griz who blogs about How to Make Money Online, have been writing about this for some time. Griz has an ugly looking blogger blog, hosted on a free platform, and many of the first time visitors to his site don’t even get onto his content because they assume it must be average because of the way the blog looks, or that fact that it is on a free platform. Well reading his blog will make you money. It really is a one stop shop to making money with Google Adsense and Niche blogs. And it makes him 1000′s each month.

What mistakes people make

People want to make money like the A-list blogger’s, so they copy them. Problems is it is hard to replicate what most A-lister’s have done. What most first timers see is a blog with 30,000 RSS readers and think, well if I some how get 30,000 RSS readers I can make a living out of this.

If you get 30,000 readers on your blog then yes you can probably make a living selling stuff to your readers like affiliate offers, and sign ups to the next best thing. But if you don’t have 30,000 RSS readers how can you replicate this same method. Selling affiliate offers and signing up people to the next big thing won’t make you money. All your readers, if you have any, have signed up to the A-listers affiliate links.

Social sites V Organic Traffic

We need to define a difference between an A-list blog(or social blog) and the blog you want. A-list blogs make money because they have lots of subscribers. They can sell stuff to their subscribers, because most of them believe that if they do what the A-lister says they will make money. You want to make money by getting organic traffic from search engines. You will make money by attracting visitors to your site who are searching for something (have a need), and some of them will click on your ads because the ads closely align with their need.

So how can you earn money online

This is a step by step guide to making money with an Adsense niche site.

Step 1 : Pick A niche

You need to have plenty of potential search visitors, and it helps to have higher paying keywords if we are going to monetize it with Adsense. Use this tool, making sure you show the column Average CPC.

Step 2 : Pick your Keywords – very important – don’t skip

You can use the Adwords tool above for this, however, at times some of the volume results are exaggerated. Try something like this keyword tool. Keyword Elite is also good, but that costs a bit, and I am not here to sell you anything. Pick one main keyword which has plenty of searches, and at least 4 others which complement it.

Step 3 : Pick a platform

WordPress sites are great, but you need a host, and to buy a domain. If this is your first attempt at making money online, why not try blogger. If you go down the buying a domain path, try and get a domain which has your main keyword in it. Normally it can take up to six months before you will get any google traffic on a new domain (Sandbox effect), however, on one occasion I found a domain “myKeyword.net” which started ranking in Google 3 days after registering the domain. Albeit for a fairly low competition keyword with roughly 1000 searches a month. If you want your own domain also consider buying an old expired domain, it will rank much faster than a new domain. If you use blogger, try and get the keyword in the URL also. It helps.

Step 4 : Set up your site – On site SEO

Your main keyword needs to be in the title of you homepage. You want your main keyword to appear in things like H1 header tags – i.e. article titles. In image alt text. In the first few paragraphs of text on the page. It’s important you write for your reader still, but get your keywords in there.

Step 5 : Write some content

You want at least 5 articles before you start. Write good clever content about your topic, include your keywords in your headings. The better your content is the more likely to will attract natural links which you don’t have to get your self. Link bait is content that is written with the intention of attracting links from other sites .i.e. a linkable resource.

Step 6 : Build Anchored Backlinks

Assuming you selected good keywords in step 2, this is the step that will determine your success, and it is probably the hardest. Backlinks are like search engine recommendations for your site. If you have lots of them from well ranked sites, your site will rank well and get lots of traffic. The “Anchored” part of it is what determines what terms or words you rank for. I.e. if a link says “check out this “site“”, and the link is from the word site, that doesn’t tell anything about the site, and thus isn’t as valuable. However, if a link says “check out this information about “how to earn money online” ” and the link is around the term how to earn money online, search engines will see your site is about earning money online.

Step 7 : Where to get Anchored Backlinks

Here is the valuable resource in this post. I have spent considerable time building up this resource and I am sharing it with you for free. All of the backlinks below are legit sites, so please don’t spam your crappy url’s on them. It’s a waste of time.

1) Comment on Keywordluv blogs

Blogs like this one have a plug-in called Keywordluv so you can get a backlink that is anchored. You have to leave your name in the format Yourname@keyword. You can also use the custom Google search below which only searches a list of blogs which have keywordluv installed. I am updating it regularly. DO NOT SPAM THESE BLOGS. Leave meaningful comments in the correct format and you will be rewarded. One of the leading contenders in the Busby SEO Challenge used Keywordluv to build up search engine rankings with great success.

2) Comment on forums that allow a link in your signature

Many forums allow you to add a signature with links to your site. If you have commented on 100 posts in forum then that is 100 links back to your site. Unless the forum post itself has been linked to, to build up PR, the pages don’t carry a huge amount of juice, however, it is still well worth the effort of adding a signature with the correct anchor if you post on forums anyway.

3) Submit to social bookmark sites

Social Marker is a good free online tool to achieve this. I only bother with the sites that have do follow links. The first time you use it, it is slow as you have to sign up with all the sites. After that each following run through only takes a few minutes. Bookmark all your good articles with this site.

Here is a huge list of Pligg based social bookmarking sites for you to submit to. I am not suggesting it is a good idea to submit to them all, however, the sites in your niche and the sites with high PR would be well worth signing up for and submitting your content.

4) Article sites

Free article sites offer you a great opportunity to get great targeted anchored backlinks. You write a short informative article about a topic in your niche and use your main keyword in the heading. Add two or three (depending on site) anchored links in the resource box, then submit away. Many of the sites require you write unique articles, so I only suggest submitting them to the best sites with the highest PR.

Article Dashboard – This site gets a lot of backlinks because it offers article directory software. So the links from your articles should carry some juice.

Ezine – The largest and most popular article directory, well worth submitting to. It will bring you some direct traffic also.

5) Friends

Making friends is the best way to get high quality anchored links to your sites. If you have a project which you want links for, drop me a line, I might have a project that would be a good link exchange for your site. I have 7 different niche sites as of writing this article.

That’s it. There is well over 100 do follow links above, all of which allow you to use an anchored link to target specific keywords, and many of them from authority sites. I hope you find this a useful resource.
